In early November, an international conference of the same name was held on air quality and specifically air pollution from heating, which represents a significant environmental and health challenge, especially in areas with a high share of solid fuel combustion. The conference, organized as part of the LIFE Populair project, was intended for representatives of local governments and air protection experts who are looking for effective solutions to reduce emissions and improve air quality in their regions.
The conference offered practical guidelines, expert analyses and examples of successful measures that municipalities can use to improve air quality and protect public health. During the conference, so-called round tables were also held, which created a space for expert discussion between representatives of municipalities, district offices, professional institutions, air quality managers (AQMs) and LIFE Populair project partners. The discussions brought valuable insights into the implementation of air quality improvement measures, as well as obstacles and needs of municipalities. The round tables were dedicated to air quality improvement programmes, small combustion equipment control and clean air measures.
Key conclusions from the round tables:
Municipalities want to cooperate, but need more information, finance and capacity.
Household heating and transport remain the biggest challenges.
The inspection of small combustion devices is currently insufficient – there is a lack of tools, methodology and connections with chimney sweeps.
The legislation has several ambiguities and the upcoming changes must align the Air Act with the Construction Act.
Municipalities need accessible financing, longer deadlines and simple examples of good practice.
The most effective way is education – an informed citizen is the key to lasting changes. (Regional air quality managers play a key role in the field at this point.)
A trailer with heating devices serving as demonstrations of proper heating was also presented to the conference participants. The principles of proper heating, heating from above, the processes of proper wood drying and measuring its moisture content were presented.
Several representatives of local governments expressed interest in participating in local events with the demonstration trailer.
