Mobility
The Slovak Environmental Agency, as the national coordinator of the European Mobility Week (EMW), yesterday ceremoniously evaluated the ETM 2025 campaign and awarded those who, with their activities, significantly contributed to sustainable mobility in Slovakia.
In the Active Self-Government category, the city of Trnava won first place, which strategically approaches the support of sustainable mobility and connects the measures of the ETM campaign with urban transport and investments in infrastructure. Among the city’s key initiatives are the integration of Trnava public transport with regional services, the introduction of discounted season tickets for public transport, the construction of new cycle paths, and the installation of bicycle stands. The city has also developed the Yellow Fairy Tale project and strengthened cooperation between the City Police and the Labour Office to improve pedestrian safety in the vicinity of schools. In addition, it organizes awareness-raising events focused on sustainable mobility, such as European Mobility Week (ETM), Kidical Mass, and the CIVITAS Summer School.
The Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region became the Active Self-Governing Region of the year 2025 thanks to the project Without Obstacles to School, through which IDS BBSK helps children overcome traffic obstacles on the way to education. The project changes the transport allowance directly into a subscription ticket or credit, so that children can be sure that they will actually get to school. Thanks to pilot projects in Jelšava and Sirek, the number of unexcused hours and missed days in children's attendance was reduced.
The prize for an active organization/institution went to the Bracovce Elementary School from the Michalovce district, which connects environmental education with specific measures to improve the quality of the environment and systematically introduces sustainable mobility topics into teaching and school life. The school introduced thematic days "Walk or bike to school" - it built a shelter and bike racks for bicycles and scooters and adapted the school's interior for safe storage of sports equipment.
The winners received their awards, but the greatest reward is that they inspire others with their approach and show that sustainable mobility has a firm place in our cities and villages. Thanks go to all the municipalities, organizations and institutions involved, which actively contribute to safer, cleaner and more accessible transport for all.
Our colleague Katarína Mičáková, air quality manager for the Trnava Region zone, was again part of the evaluation committee, for whom the topic of sustainable mobility and safe commuting of children to schools is key in efforts to improve air quality and the health of residents.
The ETM 2025 award ceremony was the culmination of the professional workshop Sustainable Mobility, where the activities of the LIFE IP project – Improving Air Quality were presented by our colleague Veronika Basta. The workshop participants learned what the study trip to Copenhagen for examples of good practice, which we completed with representatives of municipalities from Slovakia at the end of June this year, gave us.
